Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves Reverses Stance, Backs Extended Medicaid Coverage for New Moms to Tackle High Maternal Mortality Rates

The Governor of Mississippi, Tate Reeves, has recently announced his support for extending Medicaid coverage to new mothers up to 12 months after giving birth. This move comes as a reversal of his previous stance on the issue, where he opposed the expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.

The proposal to extend Medicaid for new mothers aims to address the high maternal mortality rates in Mississippi, which is one of the highest in the country. According to the Mississippi State Department of Health, around 22 mothers per 100,000 live births die annually in the state. The extension would allow new mothers to have access to health care services and support for a longer period, reducing the likelihood of complications that could lead to death.

Governor Reeves' change of heart was influenced by data showing the effectiveness of Medicaid coverage in reducing maternal mortality rates in other states. In addition, the governor's wife, Elee Reeves, who is a supporter of maternal health initiatives, also played a role in advocating for the extension of Medicaid for new mothers.

The proposal to extend Medicaid for new mothers is still pending approval from the state legislature. However, advocates for maternal health and healthcare access are hopeful that this announcement will lead to a positive change in Mississippi's healthcare system.
